Progreso, Mexico: A Day at Yucatán's Gulf Port and Its 8 km Pier
This guide covers Progreso on Yucatán's Gulf coast, 36 km from Mérida. If you're after the border town across from Progreso, Texas, that's Nuevo Progreso, Tamaulipas, about 1,000 km away.

Progreso is Yucatán's Gulf port, about 36 km from Mérida, with the world's longest pier: 8,018.98 m, certified by Guinness. Come for a beach day on the malecón, by cruise ship or on the MX$28 bus (July 2026). Ships berth about 6 km offshore and you can't walk the pier, so build the shuttle into your day. Most 2026 calls fall on a Tuesday or Thursday.

Is Progreso Worth a Stop?
Yes, if you want a swim and a seafood lunch at a working Gulf port. The beach is a local one, and the water is shallow and green. Cruise lines write "Progreso (Mérida)", but it's a separate municipality on the coast, 36 km from inland Mérida.
It suits cruise passengers who'd rather skip the bus tour, and Mérida visitors with a free day. Families get a promenade and, in the Blue Flag zone of the Malecón Internacional, lifeguards until 4 pm (season 2026-27). Skip it if you're picturing Caribbean-blue water or a resort strip, and don't count on wide sand along the whole seafront.
For other beaches, look east at Chicxulub Puerto and Telchac Puerto, or west at Chelem and Chuburná. Our beach towns guide compares them.
Progreso Cruise Port: Getting Off and What Fits
Cruise ships do stop here: 155 calls and 470,653 passengers in 2025, the best year in seven, by port authority ASIPONA's count. You can go ashore without an excursion, but you'll need the shuttle. Ships berth about 6 km offshore (our measure on OpenStreetMap), and cruise guides say walking the pier isn't allowed.
The shuttle to town
Guides dated 2026 report a free ride of about 15 minutes, about every 20 minutes, to the Autoprogreso bus terminal on Calle 82. It sits beside the Mercado Municipal, about 380 m from the malecón. No official source covers the shuttle's operator, hours or last run. Guides put the last run about 60 minutes before all-aboard and one advises 90, so confirm it on board, and go by the ship's clock, which can differ from local time.
One guide warns of crowded returns from about 3 to 4:30 pm, worse with two ships in port. Ship excursions may pick you up on the pier and skip the shuttle.
What is there to do at the cruise port?
Shop, mostly. Celebrity's undated port page lists duty-free and souvenir shops, a pharmacy, tourist information and a pier bar with Wi-Fi. The swimming and the seafood are in town. Carry small pesos, since Yucatan.guide says only some places take cards or dollars.
How much time you get
CruiseMapper shows the regular ships in port for 8 hours or more: Carnival Valor and Margaritaville Islander from 8 am to 4 pm, Carnival Breeze from 9 am to 5 pm, and Disney Magic from 10 am to 6 pm or 8 am to 5 pm. Allow 30 minutes to get off the ship and about 35 minutes each way for shuttle and wait, and be back at the town stop 60 to 90 minutes before all-aboard. By our untested arithmetic, that leaves about 5 to 5.5 hours ashore on an 8-hour call and 3 to 3.5 on a 6-hour call.
| Plan | Time from town | 6-hour call | 8-hour call | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Malecón, swim, lunch | 2-3 h | Yes | Yes | 380 m from the shuttle stop |
| Beach club | Half a day | Yes | Yes | No published prices |
| Museo del Meteorito | About 45 min | Yes, if open | Yes | Closed Monday |
| El Corchito | 2-3 h | Tight | Yes | 3.1 km by taxi, closes 4 pm |
| Uaymitún | 1.5 h | Tight | Yes | Closed Monday, no flamingo guarantee |
| Dzibilchaltún | 3 h | No | Tight | 25.9 km by taxi, US$40-50 return (one guide) |
| Mérida by bus | 40-60 min each way | No | Yes | About 3 h in Centro |
| Xcambó | 42 min each way, plus 1 h | No | Tight | Driver or tour |
| Sendero Jurásico | About 1 h | Only on a late call | Only on a late call | Opens 5 pm, per secondary sources |
| Uxmal, Chichén Itzá | About 2 h or more each way | No | Ship tour only | We advise against Chichén Itzá |
| Excursion | Through the ship | On your own |
|---|---|---|
| Chichén Itzá | US$165-195 | US$95-110 |
| Mérida | US$75-95 | US$15-25 |
| Dzibilchaltún | US$85-110 | US$45-55 |
Sergio's Tours, listed with Sefotur, showed pier pickups of about 5 hours on its undated site, read on 31 October 2026. Adult prices were US$25 for a beach break at its Chelem beach house, US$75 for a Progreso city tour, US$85 for flamingos, salt pans and Xcambó, and US$95 for Chichén Itzá or Uxmal. A 5-hour Chichén Itzá trip, with about 2 hours' drive each way, leaves little time on site, so we don't recommend it.
Which days ships call
ASIPONA's 2026 arrival calendar, updated 5 October 2026, gives dates and ships but no times. We counted 175 calls after removing 2 January calls canceled for weather. Of those, 111 (63%) fall on a Tuesday or Thursday.
| Mon | Tue | Wed | Thu | Fri | Sat | Sun |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14 | 51 | 23 | 60 | 19 | 5 | 3 |
That pattern holds for 2026 only, because no 2027 itinerary was posted as of 31 October 2026. Carnival Breeze leads with 53 calls, ahead of Carnival Valor (49), Margaritaville Islander (34) and Disney Magic (28). Two ships share the port on 22 days of the calendar, never three. CruiseMapper's list differs on a few dates, so trust your cruise line first.

Can You Reach Mérida from the Ship?
On an 8-hour call, yes, with about 3 hours in Centro. On a 6-hour call, stay in Progreso. Take the shuttle to Calle 82 and board the Autoprogreso bus, MX$28 one way or MX$56 return (POSTA, 25 July 2026). It takes 40 to 60 minutes to calle 62, near Plaza Grande. An untested plan for an 8 am to 4 pm call:
- 8:30 am: off the ship.
- 9:30 am: bus leaves Progreso.
- 10:20 am: Plaza Grande.
- 1:30 pm: bus back from calle 62.
- 2:20 pm: Progreso terminal, shuttle by 2:30 pm.
In three hours you can walk Plaza Grande and a few of the sights in Centro, then eat from our restaurant list. A taxi from the town stop to Mérida runs US$30-50 one way, per Bucket List Guides and Cruise Prodigy (August and September 2026).
Mérida to Progreso: Bus, Uber, Taxi or Car
Take the bus. Autoprogreso leaves calle 62 No. 524, between 65 and 67, about every 15 minutes (POSTA, 25 July 2026), and drops you about 380 m from the malecón. Expect lines on weekends, holidays and vacation periods. Children pay full fare. Mérida without a car covers the wider system.
| Mode | Time | One way |
|---|---|---|
| Autoprogreso bus | 40-60 min, from Mérida 6 am to 10 pm | MX$28, INAPAM seniors MX$25 |
| Uber | 30-40 min | MX$350-450, more with surge |
| Taxi | 30-40 min | MX$450-600 |
| Car | 30-40 min, 36 km | Fuel, parking price unknown |
We could not confirm the last bus back, so ask at the Progreso terminal as soon as you arrive. Don't plan on Va y Ven: no route on ATY's list, read on 31 October 2026, names Progreso, and we found no direct route from Centro to the malecón, though that list isn't proof that none runs. From Mérida airport it's 44 km, about 42 minutes in free-flowing traffic by our routing.
Roads on 31 October 2026
The main highway is clear: the bridge at km 34.1 reopened on 20 October after nearly 50 days (Por Esto, 20 October 2026). The old Progreso-Chelem road has been closed since the night of 13 October, so traffic for Chelem now runs through Progreso. SICT announced about 8 weeks (Por Esto, 14 October 2026), but demolition slipped to 20 October (Diario de Yucatán, 19 October 2026), and on 30 October Por Esto reported the Yucalpetén II bridge 60% complete with no finish date.
Which day to go
In winter, skip Tuesdays and Thursdays for a calmer malecón. Weekends have almost no ships (8 calls in 2026) but draw Mérida families, and Por Esto reported on 3 July 2026 a workers' estimate of at least 10,000 tourists each July and August weekend. A Wednesday or Friday with no ship is probably the calmest choice with everything open, though no crowd count exists.
Progreso Beach and the Two Malecones
Progreso has two promenades, one on each side of the pier, free and open 24 hours. A gap of about 245 m at the pier foot makes the end-to-end walk about 2.4 km.
| Feature | Malecón Internacional | Malecón Tradicional |
|---|---|---|
| Side of the pier | West | East, along Calle 19 |
| Promenade | About 1.2 km | About 1.0 km |
| Blue Flag zone | About 500 m, season 2026-27 | 198 m, last kit 2025-26, 2026-27 status unconfirmed |
| Character | Deck, bike lane, summer rides | Restaurants, Castro statue, inclusive beach, museum near the east end |
Lifeguards and flags
For season 2026-27 the municipality reports lifeguards daily from 8 am to 4 pm in the Internacional's Blue Flag zone, with restrooms on the same hours. Its 2025-26 kit gives the same lifeguard hours for the Tradicional zone. We found none documented outside those hours or zones, so a late-afternoon swim has no cover.
Flags run green (best conditions), yellow (caution), red (dangerous) and black (no swimming). Por Esto reported on 20 August 2025 that lifeguards flew yellow for afternoon swells. Swimming is banned at the Bocana de Chuburná, in the same municipality, because of strong currents (Por Esto, 28 March 2026). The municipal code of conduct asks for biodegradable sunscreen and tells you to leave shells, rocks and sand where they are.
Parking and access
The kit's map shows two parking areas behind the Internacional zone, and we found no price. Arrive early on summer weekends. The Internacional has walkways to the sand, and the 2025-26 kit describes an inclusive beach with amphibious chairs in the Tradicional zone.
The sand and the beach clubs
Sand width varies along the seafront. Yucatán Magazine (22 October 2026) puts the worst damage at the east end of the Malecón Tradicional, with up to 20 m lost after Hurricane Milton in 2024. It also quotes veteran fishermen on the west side describing a beach about 300 m wide, which is their account and unmeasured. The same report says a September 2025 refill brought 720 m³ of sand from Sisal's harbor.
Sefotur's directory lists three beach clubs in town, none with published prices: El Haguay and La Casa del Pastel at the east end of the Tradicional, and Marymar just west of the pier foot. We found no peso price for chairs or palapas on the open sand. Guides from 2022 to 2026 say they come with a food or drink order or rent cheaply, and one 2026 guide reports a US$10-15 minimum spend for a club lounger.
Water quality
Two official series read differently. Cofepris, through Semarnat's Playas Limpias data, rated all 56 samples at 4 Playa Progreso sites fit from March 2022 to June 2026, at 10 to 29 enterococci per 100 ml against a limit of 200. The town's own lab reports show single samples above 200 at the Malecón Internacional: 240 on 15 May and 463 on 7 September 2026. The cause is unknown, and we found no retest or closure notice as of 31 October 2026.

Progreso Pier: 8 km of Concrete and Arches
Guinness certified the pier as the longest in the world on 1 July 2023, at 8,018.98 m. The 6.5 km still repeated on cruise sites is the older figure, and ships berth about 6 km from shore.
NASA's 2015 note explains the length: the continental shelf here is wide and shallow, so length buys depth. ASIPONA credits the Danish firm Christiani & Nielsen with the design of the concrete pier built from 1937 to 1941, about 2 km long at first, to let deeper-draft ships reach Yucatán. Extensions began in 1985, and El Universal (5 July 2023) dates the Terminal Remota to 1989. POSTA (4 September 2025) counts 146 arches and reports a parallel viaduct of about 2.5 km, built in 2014 to take traffic off them.
Can you walk it? Normally no. ASIPONA opened the Muelle de Arcos for an anniversary walk on 26 September 2026, and more than 2,700 people took part. The Guinness plaque sits behind the Juan Miguel Castro statue, facing the arches.

Things to Do in Progreso, and Where to Eat
The malecón and the sea cost nothing. Beyond them, these stops have published hours or fees.
| Place | Where | Hours | Adult fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Museo del Meteorito | Calle 19 No. 142, near the east end of the Tradicional | Tue-Sun 11 am to 6:30 pm (July 2026) | MX$350, nationals MX$250 (July 2026) |
| El Corchito | 3.1 km | Daily 9 am to 4 pm (Cultur's undated page, read 31 October 2026) | MX$200, nationals MX$100 (same page) |
| Sendero Jurásico | About 7 km | 5 to 11 pm, per secondary sources (latest September 2026) | MX$300 foreigners (2026 revenue law) |
| Uaymitún lookout | 15.3 km | Tue-Sun 7 am to 12:30 am (July 2026) | Free (July 2026) |
| Xcambó | About 36 km | Daily 8 am to 5 pm (INAH, January 2026) | MX$210, nationals and residents MX$105 (INAH, January 2026) |
The Museo del Meteorito is Cultur's state museum, with mechatronic dinosaurs, virtual reality and audio in Spanish, English and Maya. It closes on Mondays, a day with 14 cruise calls in 2026. For cenotes near Progreso, El Corchito, a Cultur reserve, runs a boat through the mangrove to the cenotes Helechos, Corchito and Pájaros.
The state reopened the Uaymitún lookout tower on the Progreso-Telchac road on 23 July 2026 after six years. Flamingos come mainly at morning and dusk, so a midday visit may show few or none. The Faro, the town's lighthouse, is normally closed. POSTA (5 July 2025) reported openings around anniversary dates in 2025, and we found no 2026 date.
On the water, Diario de Yucatán put boat trips at MX$600-800 per person and paddleboards at about MX$500 an hour in December 2025. Yucatán.Travel's undated experience list has a retro bike ride along both malecones, about an hour at about MX$50 per person, through Sergio's Tours. Further along the coast, Sisal and Celestún make their own day trips.
Where to eat
Nobody on our team has eaten at these places. All five are listed in Sefotur's InvenTur directory, which shows a business is registered, with no word on quality or whether it's open that day. None has a dated price, but Diario de Yucatán put a meal on the beach at MX$350-750 per person in December 2025, and guides say places a few blocks back may be cheaper.
| Restaurant | Suits | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Eladio's Bar | A beer and Yucatecan snacks near the shuttle stop | Pier end of the Malecón Tradicional |
| Crabster Seafood & Grill | A sit-down seafood lunch | Malecón Tradicional |
| Los Cocos II | Seafood a block off the waterfront | Calle 78 No. 4 |
| Los Mariscos de Chichí | A malecón lunch further from the pier | Malecón Tradicional |
| Sartén Cubano | A break from seafood | Malecón Tradicional |
Where to Stay in Progreso
Sefotur's directory lists 31 lodgings in Progreso town, 502 rooms in all. We haven't stayed at any of the six below. Each is labeled by who it seems to suit, which is our reading of listed facts and no substitute for a review. Room counts are approximate.
| Hotel | Suits | Listed facts |
|---|---|---|
| Playa Linda | Budget travelers who want the beach | About 30 rooms, pier end of the Tradicional. MexicoCassie (30 October 2026) puts its average rate well under US$100 |
| Domani Suites | Families who want a kitchen | About 30 rooms, suites for up to 6 with kitchenettes |
| Progreso Beach | Larger groups who want parking | About 51 rooms, facing the museum, free parking |
| Hotel Scappata | Couples who want a pool and a beach club | About 18 rooms, outdoor pool, beach club |
| Yaxactún | Travelers happy to sit a few blocks back for a pool | About 20 rooms, small pool as of 2023 |
| Costa Club (ISSTEY) | Families with a car who want pools over the malecón | State-run, about 56 rooms in Yucalpetén, 7.3 km from the bus terminal. Non-member booking unclear |
Progreso Weather and When to Go
November to April gives the mildest days, with a risk of nortes, the cold fronts that canceled 2 calls in January 2026. Progreso's own SMN station shows highs 2.2 to 4.3 °C below Mérida's in every month and warmer nights. Rain is a third lower, 612.7 mm a year against 927.2 mm, and peaks in June and October.
| Month | High °C (°F) | Low °C (°F) | Rain mm | Rain days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jan | 27.4 (81) | 19.5 (67) | 24.8 | 4.7 |
| Feb | 28.7 (84) | 19.8 (68) | 20.0 | 3.9 |
| Mar | 30.5 (87) | 20.6 (69) | 16.5 | 2.7 |
| Apr | 32.3 (90) | 22.4 (72) | 15.0 | 1.9 |
| May | 32.7 (91) | 23.8 (75) | 34.2 | 3.0 |
| Jun | 32.5 (91) | 24.4 (76) | 113.2 | 9.8 |
| Jul | 32.1 (90) | 24.3 (76) | 73.6 | 7.5 |
| Aug | 32.2 (90) | 24.3 (76) | 61.7 | 7.6 |
| Sep | 32.2 (90) | 24.3 (76) | 75.8 | 9.1 |
| Oct | 31.0 (88) | 23.9 (75) | 106.8 | 9.9 |
| Nov | 29.2 (85) | 21.9 (71) | 46.5 | 5.5 |
| Dec | 27.9 (82) | 20.3 (69) | 24.6 | 4.6 |
- Sargassum. UnoTV (13 February 2026) places the strongest landings from April to August, but Por Esto reported a landing on the malecones after a cold front (18 November 2025).
- Algal blooms. A closure of nearly a month in 2022 and a bloom in 2025 both came in late summer. In 2025 tours stopped from about 11 to 19 August, and the state committee declared red tide on 12 August (Por Esto, 5 September 2022; 12 and 20 August 2025). We found no 2026 event as of 31 October 2026, but no standing page shows the current status, so that's no all-clear. Advice from 2025: don't eat fish found dead on the shore, and stay out of the sea where a notice applies.
- Hurricanes. The season runs from 1 June to 30 November. See our hurricane guide and the best-time guide, which explains nortes.
- Sea temperature. The municipal lab reports logged 25 to 31 °C from February to September 2026, as single samples.

Is Progreso Safe?
First, check which Progreso you mean. For the border state, Canada (updated 19 October 2026) and the UK (updated 20 October 2026) both advise against non-essential travel to Tamaulipas, with named exceptions, and neither carries a regional warning for Yucatán. We couldn't load the US State Department page on 31 October 2026, so read it directly.
For Progreso, Yucatán, Por Esto reported on 13 October 2026 that the state had Mexico's lowest homicide count for January to September 2026: 21. Progreso's reported robbery rate runs more than twice the state's, though, on INEGI's 2025 population estimate. In 2025 the municipality logged 215 case files, including 53 robberies, 5 of them on the street and all 5 recorded as violent, and 2 intentional homicides.
| Place | All offenses | Robberies | Robberies per 100,000 | Intentional homicides |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Progreso | 215 | 53 | 69.1 | 2 |
| Mérida | 3,134 | 286 | 27.1 | 14 |
| Yucatán | 5,357 | 724 | 28.9 | 33 |
The official file refused our download, so these counts come from elcri.men, an independent copy that matches published state totals through 2025. The state's 33 homicides come from SESNSP's January 2026 presentation. Official counts undercount, and they don't separate visitors from residents. The same file logged 6 traffic deaths in the municipality in 2025, so take care on the highway. For the wider picture, see is Mérida safe and our crime statistics page. In an emergency, dial 911.
A sample 8-hour call in town (8 am to 4 pm)
- 8:30 am Off the ship and onto the shuttle. Allow about 35 minutes with the wait.
- 9:05 am Town stop on Calle 82. Walk about 380 m to the malecón.
- 9:20 am Swim in the Malecón Internacional's Blue Flag zone and check the flag first. Lifeguards work from 8 am to 4 pm (season 2026-27).
- 11:00 am Museo del Meteorito opens, Tuesday to Sunday (July 2026 hours). The guided tour takes about 45 minutes.
- 12:15 pm Seafood lunch on the Malecón Tradicional. Ask the price before ordering by weight.
- 1:30 pm Walk west past the Castro statue and the letters for the photo with the arches.
- 2:15 pm Back at the town stop, 60 to 90 minutes before all-aboard. Confirm the last shuttle with your ship.
Frequently asked questions
Is Progreso the same as Nuevo Progreso?
No. Progreso is on the Gulf coast of Yucatán, 36 km from Mérida. Nuevo Progreso is a border town in Tamaulipas, across from Progreso, Texas, about 1,000 km away in a straight line.
How long is the Progreso pier?
Guinness certified it at 8,018.98 m on 1 July 2023. You'll also see 6.5 km, an older figure. Ships berth about 6 km offshore.
Can you get off the ship without an excursion?
Yes. Cruise guides say walking the pier isn't allowed and report a free shuttle of about 15 minutes to Calle 82, about 380 m from the malecón. Confirm the last run with your ship.
Can you get to Mérida from the cruise port?
Yes, on an 8-hour call. Take the shuttle, then the Autoprogreso bus, MX$28 one way in July 2026, 40 to 60 minutes. That leaves about 3 hours in Centro. Skip it on a 6-hour call.
Is Progreso worth visiting, and what's the best thing to do?
Yes, if you expect a working Gulf port with a local beach. The best single stop depends on the day: the Museo del Meteorito from Tuesday to Sunday (July 2026 hours), or El Corchito for cenotes in the mangrove.
Is Progreso or Cozumel better?
They're different trips. ASIPONA's January to September 2026 count puts Cozumel at 3,715,770 cruise passengers and Progreso at 402,454, about a ninth as many. Cozumel is the pick for Caribbean-blue water. Progreso has shallow green Gulf water, with Mérida and Maya sites within reach.
Is Progreso safe?
Por Esto reported on 13 October 2026 that Yucatán had Mexico's lowest homicide count for January to September 2026. Progreso's robbery rate runs more than twice the state's on INEGI's 2025 estimate, with 53 robberies in 2025. If you mean the border town, Canada and the UK advise against non-essential travel to Tamaulipas (October 2026).
Does Progreso have sargassum or red tide?
Sometimes. Sargassum is strongest from April to August, with landings outside those months, such as November 2025. An algal bloom stopped boat tours in August 2025, and the state committee declared red tide on 12 August 2025. We found no 2026 event as of 31 October 2026, and no standing page shows the current status.
How we reported this
We compiled this page from the sources below without a site visit: nobody on our team went to Progreso for it, and we have not stayed or eaten at the places named. Facts were checked on 31 October 2026. Not yet confirmed on the ground: who runs the cruise shuttle, its hours and last run; the last bus back to Mérida; parking and palapa prices; sand widths; the Malecón Tradicional's Blue Flag status for 2026-27; whether the inclusive beach still operates; and any retest of the 7 September 2026 water sample. Rules on alcohol and glass on the malecón are also unconfirmed. Crime counts come through a third-party copy because the official file refused our download. Spotted something out of date? Tell us.
