Best Time to Visit Mérida: Weather Month by Month and the May Heat

These figures are climate normals from Mexico's national weather service, the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN): 30-year averages (1991–2020) recorded at station 31036, C.I.C.Y., in the municipality of Mérida. An average high is not the hottest day of the month. May averages 37.0°C (99°F), and on its peak days the thermometer passes 40°C (104°F).

Humidity is high year-round, so the heat index regularly outruns the thermometer, and May's 37°C (99°F) feels like more. There is no cold season: the 'fresh' winter nights average lows of 17.6–18.4°C (64–65°F) from December to February.

Mérida in October: easing rains and Hanal Pixán

October in Mérida averages a high of 33.2°C (92°F), a low of 21.9°C (71°F) and 11.5 rainy days (100.1 mm, about 3.9 in, for the month; SMN 1991–2020 normals). It is still rainy season and hurricane season, but it rains less than in September (158.5 mm), and afternoons run almost 4°C (7°F) cooler than in May. Norte season is under way too. A norte is what locals call a cold front and the north wind it brings, and SMN's forecast for 2026–2027 expects 7 fronts across Mexico in October, after 3 in September, as reported by UnoTV (those are national counts, not Yucatán ones).

Is October a good time to go? If an afternoon storm doesn't bother you, yes: the city is still in its quiet season, with thinner crowds and softer prices. The end of the month changes pace with the Festival de las Ánimas, October 24–November 2, 2026, and the Paseo de las Ánimas procession on Friday, October 30, which sets off at 8 p.m. from the Cementerio General (Diario de Yucatán) and ends at San Juan park, according to the city's festival page. Mérida in November: the cool comes back

November averages a high of 31.6°C (89°F), a low of 19.7°C (67°F) and 6.6 rainy days (38.7 mm, about 1.5 in; SMN 1991–2020 normals), down from 11.5 rainy days in October. Nights turn fresh again, and November 30 closes the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1–November 30 according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC). Nortes get more frequent: SMN forecasts 8 cold fronts nationwide for November 2026 (UnoTV), and when one reaches Yucatán it brings wind, the odd cloudy day and cooler nights.

Is it a good time to visit? It is one of the best, and it comes before the December–February high season. The first two days still belong to Hanal Pixán, since the Festival de las Ánimas closes on November 2. Municipal Christmas starts at the end of the month: in 2025 the city government scheduled tree lightings from November 30 to December 23, according to Por Esto, and the 2026 program had not been announced as of October 24, 2026. Flamingo season starts too: CONANP puts the largest concentrations at Celestún from November to February.

Mérida in December: is it a good time to go?

Yes: December is one of the best months, with an average high of 30.7°C (87°F), a low of 18.3°C (65°F) and 4.6 rainy days (32.8 mm, about 1.3 in; SMN 1991–2020 normals). Hurricane season is over, and weather changes arrive with the nortes. For 2026–2027 SMN forecasts 9 cold fronts nationwide in December, the most of any month in the season (UnoTV). When a strong one blows through, nights can drop to 14–16°C (57–61°F) and mornings can start cloudy and windy, so pack a light layer.

Along with January and February it is peak visitor season, so book Centro stays earlier than you think you need to. The calendar is all Christmas: in 2025 the city lit trees across town from November 30 to December 23, with the Plaza Grande lighting on December 3 (Por Esto). Noche Blanca, though, is not a December event. It happens once a year, and in 2025 and 2026 it fell in late May or mid-June (dates in the events table below).

Mérida in January: the coolest month and Mérida Fest

January is Mérida's coolest month: an average high of 30.1°C (86°F), a low of 17.6°C (64°F) and 5 rainy days (31.7 mm, about 1.2 in; SMN 1991–2020 normals). It has the lowest average high and the lowest average low of the year, and afternoons are still T-shirt weather. Nortes keep coming (SMN forecasts 8 cold fronts nationwide for January 2027, per UnoTV), and they are what bring the 14–16°C (57–61°F) nights when meridanos pull out their jackets.

Is it worth it? For walking the Centro and visiting ruins without punishing heat, it is one of the best months, and it is also high season, so book ahead. Mérida Fest, the city's arts festival, runs January 5–24, 2027, with its big date on January 6, when Mérida marks 485 years since its founding in 1542. Diario de Yucatán and POSTA reported those dates in July 2026, when the call for participants opened; those reports did not yet include a program.

Mérida in February: Carnaval and the year's lowest rainfall

February has the year's lowest rainfall (19.8 mm, about 0.8 in, over roughly 3 days), with an average high of 32.2°C (90°F) and a low of 18.4°C (65°F) (SMN 1991–2020 normals). Nights stay fresh and afternoons start warming toward March, which averages 34.3°C (94°F). SMN forecasts 7 cold fronts nationwide for February 2027 (UnoTV), down from 9 in December, so a norte can still bring wind and a cooler night.

High season continues, as in December and January, so book your stay early. Carnaval de Mérida 2027 falls in the days before Ash Wednesday (February 10, 2027), with parades and the city at its most exuberant; exact parade dates are still to be confirmed. If you would rather skip Carnaval, the second half of February falls after Ash Wednesday.

How hot does Mérida get?

From April through June, Mérida is among the hottest cities in the Americas. May's average high is 37.0°C (99°F) in SMN's 1991–2020 normals, but the hottest days reach 38–40°C (100–104°F), occasionally higher, and in the peak weeks nighttime temperatures can hold above 30°C (86°F). Locals organize the day around it, with markets and errands by 10 a.m., shade and AC through the afternoon, and life resuming after 6 p.m. Adopt that rhythm and you can do fine even in May.

The local escape is the coast. SMN normals put average highs at Progreso about 2–4°C (4–8°F) below Mérida's in every month, which is why meridanos head for the beach in the hot months, from Telchac Puerto in the east through Chicxulub Puerto and Chelem to Sisal in the west.

What is the rainy season like?

From June through October, the rainy season follows a classic tropical pattern: bright mornings, building clouds, a loud afternoon or evening downpour, then clear air. Whole washed-out days are uncommon, so plan outdoor mornings and indoor afternoons (museum, market, long lunch). Water pools deep in low-lying streets for a few hours after big storms, and sidewalks dry fast.

For travelers it is a good season: everything is green, cenotes are full, crowds thin, and prices soften. For residents it is also mosquito season, so repellent at dusk is the rule (dengue circulates in season).

Hurricane season

The Atlantic season runs June 1–November 30, peaking August–October. Direct hurricane hits on Mérida are infrequent, because the city sits inland and Yucatán's flat limestone shelf takes the edge off many systems. The peninsula does get brushed and occasionally hit hard, though (Hurricane Isidoro in 2002 remains the local reference event). Thinking of moving here? Visit in May on purpose

Tourists should aim for November–February. Future residents should do the opposite once: spend ten days in Mérida in May, live normally with markets, walks and evenings out, and see how you cope with the heat.
