Chelem is a beach town in Progreso municipality, on the Gulf coast about 44 km north of Mérida; Chuburná Puerto is 8.5 km farther west. As of 30 October 2026 the Yucalpetén II bridge was closed, so you reach both through Progreso and over the harbor bridge. Cayo Chelem, in Quintana Roo, is a different place, and Chuburná Puerto is not Chuburná de Hidalgo, a Mérida neighborhood. Expect winter snowbirds, empty houses in the fall, passing water tests and a shoreline that is eroding.

Getting there during the Yucalpetén II closure

As of 30 October 2026, the old Progreso-Chelem road was closed to all traffic from km 32.5 of the Mérida-Progreso highway to the Yucalpetén-Chelem traffic circle for the Yucalpetén II bridge rebuild. It closed in mid-October. SICT, the federal transport ministry, announced eight weeks and reported 60% progress on 29 October (Diario de Yucatán; Por Esto, 30 October); no reopening date has been published.

Directions online still send you across that bridge, and notices from June 2026 about using it were for a different job. Take SICT's route (Por Esto, 14 October 2026):

  1. Drive into Progreso.
  2. Take the branch road to Yucalpetén and follow the signs.
  3. Cross the harbor bridge to Chelem.
  4. For Chuburná Puerto, keep going west along the coast.

Return the same way. From Mérida's Plaza Grande that is about 47 km to Chelem and 56 km to Chuburná Puerto, 48 and 57 minutes with no traffic in our OpenStreetMap routing. Allow extra time: repaving was under way in Progreso (Diario de Yucatán, 21 October 2026) and on the branch road (Por Esto, 30 September 2026), with no closures reported.

Once the road reopens, the usual route returns: Highway 261, the Chelem turnoff before the port, the bridge, then calle 15 west to Chuburná.

Without a car: bus, combi and taxi

Progreso is the easy part. Autoprogreso buses leave from calle 62 between 65 and 67 in Centro: MX$28 one way, 06:00 to 22:00, about every 15 minutes, a 40- to 50-minute ride (POSTA, July 2026). A taxi from Centro to Progreso runs about MX$450-600, an app ride about MX$350-450 (Por Esto, July 2026).

Past Progreso it gets harder. A local combi runs to Chuburná Puerto (Food & Pleasure, September 2026), but the departure point, fare, hours and any stop at Chelem are unconfirmed. Check by phone with the state transport agency (ATY) or your host before you leave.

We found no Va y Ven route to either town and no taxi fare from Mérida to Chelem. For more, see Mérida without a car.

Where is Chelem, Mexico?

Chelem, population 4,862 in the 2020 census, is on the Gulf of Mexico in Progreso municipality, Yucatán. It is about 44 km from Mérida's Plaza Grande on the normal route, roughly 45 minutes, and about 10 km west of central Progreso, with Yucalpetén harbor between them. Chuburná Puerto, population 2,874, is 8.5 km farther west. Beyond it the coast runs on to Sisal and Celestún.

Watch the names. Chuburná de Hidalgo is a neighborhood inside Mérida, and any Va y Ven city bus with "Chuburná" in its name goes there. Cayo Chelem is in Quintana Roo, near the Belize border.

Chelem is usually explained as "place of the urraca," a bird, though we found no solid source for that.

The beach: sand, sea and erosion

This shore has been losing sand for decades. UNAM engineers measured about 1 m a year in 2010-11 on a stretch east of Chelem's center, and in the worst section the sea had reached the houses. A researcher quoted by Por Esto (7 April 2026) says up to 6 m a year in high-risk zones such as Chelem, Chuburná and Chicxulub. We found no 2026 width measurement for either town. Before you rent or buy, look at the beach in front of the house.

UNAM's explanation is the 8 km Progreso pier, which disrupts how sand moves along the coast; in the same survey, groins held sand on one side and did harm on the other. Residents blame dredging for the port expansion since January 2025 (Por Esto, April 2026), a claim no study we read measures. The state spent MX$50 million on 7.4 km between Yucalpetén and Chelem in 2018. Residents told Por Esto in April 2024 that the loss went on.

Guides describe pale sand and shallow water, and waves stay small outside winter storms. Chelem's town beach is the 500 m north of the parish church, where a 2021 guide had palapas for rent by the hour. Chuburná's runs 1,340 m. On restrooms and showers we have nothing.

The water tests well. Cofepris, the federal health regulator, samples two points in each town three times a year. All 56 readings across 14 rounds, 2022 to June 2026, passed, with a high of 45 against a limit of 200.

Each round is a snapshot of one bacterial indicator and misses algal blooms, such as the one in August 2025. Compare this stretch with other beach towns near Mérida, and read buying property in Mérida before you sign anything on the shore.

What to do in Chelem: the ría, the church and the fish shops

Chelem is a summer town with no single big sight, spread between the beach, the plaza and the ría, the local word for the lagoon behind it. Fish shops cluster around calles 19 to 21, and a 2021 Food & Pleasure guide lists shrimp skewers, grilled clams and aguachile.

The ría lies south of town at the end of calle 20, with small piers. INEGI's business register lists the Proyecto Ecoturístico Ría de Chelem cooperative and Renta de Lanchas Julián there. We could not confirm trips or prices, so call first.

The lagoon covers about 15 km² and runs 0.5 to 1.5 m deep, per a 2008 study. Cinvestav logged 37 bird species in the Ciénaga de Progreso in the 2024 rainy season, among them winter migrants and flamingos (Diario de Yucatán, October 2024). The mangrove matters to buyers too: Profepa, the federal environmental enforcer, closed works affecting 18,596 m² of it at Chelem on 23 January 2026 (Por Esto, 17 February 2026).

Las Chelemeras, 14 women aged 30 to 85, have worked here since 2010. Their mangrove restoration project, covering 110 ha, dates from 2015 (Mongabay, January 2025). It is not a tour.

The patron feast falls on 27 November, with Mass by the ría and a boat ride, as Diario de Yucatán described it in 2018. We found no 2026 program.

Snowbird season: who comes and when

Hundreds of Canadians rent beach houses from October to March in Chuburná, Chelem, Progreso and other ports nearby, the Yucatan Times reported in January 2025. Progreso's mayor put the end closer to late February, with some staying for good (POSTA, December 2025). Families from northern and central Mexico also rent around 24 December and 1 January.

January highs run around 27-28 °C, though a norte can turn the sea rough. The same Times report quotes a couple who find Progreso expensive and gives rents of US$1,500 a month and up, about US$2,000 on the beach, for Progreso generally. That is one account from January 2025, so check it against renting in Mérida.

The Times reporter describes foreigners meeting at businesses other foreigners set up in Chelem and Chuburná, and one resident's blog adds seasonal markets, volunteer groups and charity events.

Living here: what the numbers show

There is no official count of foreigners by town. Across Progreso municipality, the 2025 Encuesta Intercensal estimates about 587 residents born in the US (0.75%, the highest share in Yucatán) and about 647 born elsewhere abroad (Diario de Yucatán, 24 September 2026).

Homes with internetabout 37%about 50%about 70%
Born abroad or birthplace not stated (a ceiling)3.7%4.8%1.5%

Temporary-use means houses nobody lives in as a usual home, and a March census misses most snowbirds.

INEGI's May 2026 business register shows supermarkets and pharmacies in both towns, a health center in each and one gas station, at Chelem. Bring cash: it lists no bank branch in either town, the municipality's are all in Progreso city, and we cannot promise an ATM. Serious cases have gone to Hospital O'Horán in Mérida (Yucatan Times, April 2023); see healthcare in Mérida. One resident blogger says the internet "still goes down" and reports salty water that affects laundry.

Nobody publishes a list of what stays open off-season. Our inference, and only that: on a weekday, the likeliest to be open are the supermarket, the pharmacy and the health center. Call before driving out for a meal.

What to do in Chuburná Puerto

The trip most people look for is the boat to Isla Columpios. It leaves from the fishing harbor (puerto de abrigo) at the west end, about 3 km from the plaza in a straight line. Parking cost MX$20 in September 2026 (Food & Pleasure).

Boat tours through the mangrove stop at Boca de la Carbonera, Petén Dzul Ha, the sunken bridge and Isla Pájaros, where flamingos sometimes turn up, depending on the season (Diario de Yucatán, March 2024).

Chuburná was declared a lookout post in 1663, along with Chicxulub, against pirates based at Laguna de Términos. After Hurricane Gilberto on 14 September 1988, many people turned from salt and fishing to tourism (Diario de Yucatán, March 2024). INEGI's register lists no gas station in town, so fill up at Chelem.

Isla Columpios: where it is and what the boat costs

Isla Columpios is about 15 islets in the shallow water west of Chuburná Puerto, with swings and palapas run by different cooperatives. You get there by water: an operator signs you up at the harbor and the crossing takes 15 to 20 minutes (POSTA, August 2025). Published prices run MX$200 to MX$500 per person by package; the latest is MX$200-350 (September 2026).

Bring cash. Seafood is sold separately at tables in the water, and you can bring your own food if you take your trash with you (POSTA, August 2025). We have no verified hours or phone numbers, so ask at the harbor first. Tours stopped for about eight days in August 2025 during an algal bloom.

The bocana: no swimming

The bocana is the mouth of the Chuburná harbor, and swimming there is prohibited. Signs ban entry, and municipal police rate it high risk for its currents and boat traffic, even when the sea looks calm (Por Esto, March and July 2026). Dozens ignored the warnings during Holy Week 2026.

Stay out of the mangrove and the aguadas too: mud, roots, low visibility and nobody watching (Por Esto, July 2026, citing Protección Civil).

Do not count on lifeguards. We found no source placing them at Chelem or Chuburná. The Navy emergency line is 800 627 4621 (Diario de Yucatán, 30 June 2026).

The Las Dunas dispute at Chuburná

Guides use Las Dunas for a picnic beach near Chuburná. The Complejo Turístico Las Dunas is a separate matter: a proposed complex of 14 towers and 138 apartments (Por Esto, July 2026).

Status as of 28 October 2026, the latest published news we found: Profepa's temporary closure of the works dates from 2 August 2026, after it found 1.3 ha cleared. A federal court has suspended the municipal licenses, the case is open, and no Semarnat ruling has been reported.

Semarnat denied the first impact statement in December 2023 and issued a conditional authorization in 2025, and the state says 58,740 m² must be conserved (Por Esto, 6 August and 28 October 2026). If you want to go to that beach, ask in town: we could not find out whether the public can still reach it.

What is at Yucalpetén?

Yucalpetén is Progreso's sheltered harbor, 4 km west of the city, with a residential neighborhood beside it. It opened on 1 June 1968 as a refuge for fishing boats. A sector representative counts about 36 marinas and 4,000 recreational boats (Por Esto, January 2026), but those in INEGI's register read as private or member clubs, and we know of no public dock or restaurant.

The nearest beach goes by another name in the official monitoring program: Playa Chelem II, 400 m that by its coordinates runs up to the west breakwater. Being sampled does not prove easy public access. The way in is undocumented, and this is the eroded stretch.

Our reading: unless you have a boat, Yucalpetén is a stop on the way to Chelem. For a seawall and city services, go on to Progreso.

Where to eat and stay: what is registered

We have no picks of our own yet. INEGI's May 2026 register gives names, not prices, hours or reviews: 139 food businesses and 14 lodgings in the Chelem locality, 47 and 2 in Chuburná. These are examples from the list, not recommendations:

  • Eat in Chelem: Restaurante Chelem Grill (calle 21 #167), the largest registered; La Terracita (calle 17 #41); Taco Maya (calle 21).
  • Eat in Chuburná: Pescadería Acuarios (calle 11); Restaurante Cristo Rey (calle 9 #39).
  • Stay in Chelem: Hotel Las Garzas (calle 17 #742); Hotel y Restaurante Casa Mamu (calle 17 #680).
  • Stay in Chuburná: Hotel Chuburná (calle 7 #61); Cabañas Maktub (calle 9).

A 2021 Food & Pleasure guide said Chelem is short on traditional hotels and long on villas, bungalows and rentals.

Weather and hazards

The SMN station is at Progreso, about 10 km east of Chelem. October rain is about the same as in Mérida, so the coast will not get you out of the rainy season.

  • Sargassum can land at any time, above all from April to August. Large amounts reached Chelem on 13 February 2026 (Uno TV).
  • Algal blooms: in August 2025 health officials ruled out toxicity to humans but advised staying out of the water in affected zones (Por Esto, August 2025).
  • Nortes: wind and rough seas, from about October.
  • Hurricanes: June to November. See the hurricane prep guide.

A day from Mérida on the Progreso detour

  1. 8:00 Leave the Plaza Grande for Progreso and cross the harbor bridge. These times are suggestions: we found no published operator schedule.
  2. 9:15 Reach the Chuburná harbor with cash and ask about boats to Isla Columpios.
  3. 13:00 Head back into town for lunch. Off-season, call ahead.
  4. 15:00 Drive 8.5 km to Chelem for the parish, the plaza and the ría at the end of calle 20.
  5. 16:30 Return to Mérida over the same harbor bridge.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Chelem, Mexico?

A beach town in Progreso municipality, Yucatán, about 44 km north of Mérida and 10 km west of Progreso. Cayo Chelem in Quintana Roo is a different place.

What airport do you fly into to go to Chelem?

Mérida (MID), about 51 km by road on the normal route and 55 km on the detour through Progreso.

How do you get to Chelem during the bridge closure?

Enter Progreso, take the Yucalpetén branch road and cross the harbor bridge. SICT announced eight weeks for the Yucalpetén II rebuild and has published no reopening date (as of 30 October 2026).

Is Chelem or Chuburná Puerto safe to live in?

Mexico's crime data stops at the municipality, so there are no town figures. Progreso municipality, which includes both towns and the city, logged 215 case files in 2025, 2 of them intentional homicide (SESNSP figures from elcri.men, a third-party copy). Yucatán registered 33 intentional-homicide cases in 2025, the lowest rate in Mexico (SESNSP via La Jornada). In late October 2026 a man died after an attack in Chelem; a suspect was formally charged with aggravated homicide, the investigation remains open and no motive has been established (Diario de Yucatán, 27 October 2026). See is Mérida safe.

Is Chelem a good place to live?

It suits people who want a small town and accept a shrinking beach. Parts of the shore have eroded for decades, about 1 m a year in UNAM's 2010-11 study, so look at the frontage first. About 60% of homes were temporary-use in 2020. Bank branches are in Progreso. Visit off-season first.

When do snowbirds come to Chelem?

Roughly October to March, mainly Canadians and Americans. Some leave by the end of February and others stay later.

What is the beach at Chelem like, and is the water clean?

Pale sand and shallow water, with small waves except in winter storms, but stretches of the Chelem shore are eroded. Every Cofepris sampling round since 2022 has passed; in June 2026 readings were 12 to 16 against a limit of 200. Sargassum can land, as it did in February 2026.

Where is Isla Columpios?

In the shallow water west of Chuburná Puerto, about 10 km west of central Chelem in a straight line. Boats leave from the Chuburná harbor, MX$200-350 per person as of September 2026. Bring cash.

How we reported this

This guide was compiled without a site visit, from official data (INEGI, SMN, Semarnat and Cofepris), a UNAM study and local press. Facts were checked on 31 October 2026. Still to confirm on the ground: the reopening of the Yucalpetén II bridge, beach width in both towns, what stays open off-season, the combi from Progreso, boat hours and operators, and public access to the Las Dunas beach and Playa Chelem II. Crime counts come from a third-party copy of SESNSP data (elcri.men). Spotted something out of date? Tell us.
